The nyckelharpa is one of Sweden’s most fascinating traditional instruments, with roots reaching back to the 14th century in the Uppland region. Once heard mostly at village gatherings, weddings, and midsummer celebrations, it has long carried the sound of traditional dances like polska and waltz. Its resonant strings allow it to sing both melody and harmony, making it powerful as a solo voice yet equally at home in folk ensembles. Today, the nyckelharpa bridges old traditions with new compositions, traveling far beyond its Swedish homeland.
